In this activity you will be able to make glue from milk! The main ingredient of a protein in milk is called casein, which you turn into your glue.

Materials

  • ½  Cup (118 ml) skim milk
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) vinegar (acetic acid solution)
  • 1½ teaspoon (7 ml) baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) water
  • Stirring spoon
  • Plastic funnel
  • Filter paper coffee, cotton cloth or paper towel
  • Small plastic cup
  • Disposable plastic cup

Safety suggestions

  • Safety glasses are required.
  • Protective clothing is recommended.
  • Do not eat or drink any of the ingredients used in this activity.
  • If you are allergic to casein or other milk proteins, you should use gloves.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after this activity.
  • Parents or adults to help you.

Disposal: There are no hazardous substances in this activity and everything can be disposed of in the trash. Containers should be cleaned for reuse.

Method

  • Under the supervision of an adult, heat 3 cups (118 ml) of skim milk in a container in the microwave. The temperature should be around 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius). Do not overheat the milk.
  • Remove the milk container from the microwave.
  • Stir frequently, add vinegar to the milk. Continue stirring until no more lumps form.
  • Allow to stand for 5 minutes. You should observe the separation of solids (which sink to the bottom) from the liquid (which remains at the top).
  • Put a paper coffee filter (or cotton cloth or paper towel) in the funnel. Place a plastic cup under the funnel.
  • First pour the liquid and then pour the solids into the funnel.
  • Pour the filtered liquid down the drain and store the solids.
  • Using a spoon, gently squeeze the excess liquid left in the solid. Transfer the solid from the paper filter to a plastic cup.
  • Add a tablespoon of water to the solids in a plastic cup. Mix it well with a spoon.
  • Add the baking soda slowly and mix well. Repeat this until no more gas bubbles form. (You may need a little more than 1 teaspoon (1.2 ml) of baking soda – but do not use too much.)

Your glue is ready! This glue will be usable for about a day and then it will break down. The damaged glue can be disposed of in the trash.

Clean your work area before continuing the test. Soap and water can be used to clean the dishes. The coffee filter (or cotton cloth or paper towel) can be disposed of in the trash.

The first part of this experiment, using vinegar, causes the casein protein to bind together and separate from the liquid part of the milk. The protein solids are called “curd” and the liquid part is called “whey”.

Adhesives are formed because the chemical reaction between milk and vinegar creates a bond between many casein molecules. These bonds form tangled chains, and these tangled chains cause the adhesive to stick together. It is important. Fat prevents the reaction and prevents the polymer chains from sticking together.

Adhesive tape history

Richard Drew began making tape in 1925. A two-inch-wide tan bar with a pressure-sensitive back. The purpose of the automatic tape was to help them cover objects that could not be painted.

As Drew tested the tape to see how much more glue was needed, a painter told Drew: “Return the tape to your Scottish bosses and tell them to put more glue on it!” The name of the adhesive was then applied to the entire line of tapes.

The first tape he invented was made of oil, resin and rubber. When the glue is applied to the back, it must be in a liquid state to spread.

These days, chemists use a chemical or physical process to convert a resin into a binder. The method used depends on the desired resistance of the bonding agent.

His next major invention was in 1932, when the first hand-held tape recorder was invented. It was made of cast iron and weighed about 7 pounds.

Then, in 1937, the “snail”, the symbolic tape player, was created. Since the invention of the hand-held Scotch tape player, Scotch tape has become a prominent part of American culture.

It is often used as a general term for people who prefer to use clear tape.

Adhesive is usually a material that allows two materials to be joined together. There are all kinds of general and versatile adhesives on the market, but there are some materials that require a certain type of adhesive to bond them. Choosing the Best Adhesive It can be complicated for a particular application. There are many variables to consider when choosing a liquid adhesive or adhesive tape. This shopping guide will help you easily choose the best type of adhesive to suit your project. Please be with us.

When choosing the right adhesive, you will find that adhesives are designed for almost any type of application and material. Here are some of the adhesives. It is possible that you have used some of these before. If you are really stuck with which adhesive to use, all you have to do is read the information on the adhesive packaging to choose one that is right for your project.

Liquid adhesives and glass tape can be used manually or with special machines, and are often cheaper than welding or other assembly equipment.

Choosing glue

What you need to know before choosing an adhesive There are a few important questions to ask yourself before choosing an adhesive to make your selection process easier.

  • On what surface do you put the glue?
  • Is the work surface clean?
  • Is the work surface smooth?
  • What is the operating temperature of the product?
  • Is it for indoor or outdoor use?
  • Is this a temporary or permanent program?

Cleaning the surface

The number one mistake that people make when using adhesive is not to clean the surface of the material before gluing. These can act as a barrier between the adhesive and the material and cause the adhesion to be lost. Always be dry and free of contamination.

راهنمای خرید انواع چسب

The temperature and the amount of exposure to the elements all affect the performance of the adhesive. You need to consider whether the adhesives are exposed to heat for a long time or for a short time? The heat has the ability to melt and loosen some of the adhesives. On the other hand, the cold can cause some adhesives to harden and reduce the amount of adhesion.

You should also be aware that adhesives are used in an indoor or outdoor application. Elements such as moisture, sunlight and dust can all be effective in destroying adhesives.

As mentioned in the previous section, choosing the right adhesive tape depends on the type of carton and packaging and the specific conditions of each product and factory. In this section we will only talk about the use of BOPP adhesive tapes in packaging.
In fact, the purpose of this article is to know the basics of these adhesives and provide simple solutions in choosing the appropriate adhesive tape.

  • Type of use: It means using automatic carton gluing machines or using manual adhesive.

In manual adhesives, different types of self-adhesive adhesives can be used in different lengths, widths and thicknesses. The quality of adhesion depends on the accuracy and power of the operator. These appliances are mostly used in low-level products and home applications.
Adhesives at least 40 microns thick should be used to work with the gluing machine. Thin adhesives are easily stretched and reduce the quality and longevity of the adhesive and improper cutting of the adhesive.
Applying uniform and adjustable pressure by semi-automatic and automatic carton gluing machines improves and maintains adhesion. The quality of adhesive rollers, proper strength and coordination of pressure arms, the ability of adhesive cutting blades, the quality and speed of carton conveyors and the ability to adjust the above are the most effective factors of quality and efficiency in these machines.
The initial adjustment of the machine (during installation and commissioning) according to the type of product and carton is very important. The operator of these machines must control and adjust the performance of the machine daily according to the quality of the adhesive.
Choosing the right car for each type of carton is something we need to discuss in another discussion.

  • Dimensions, weight and thickness of cardboard sheets: It goes without saying that with the increase in weight and dimensions of cartons, the use of stronger adhesives is necessary. Very strong adhesives are needed for packaging cartons with five or more sheets. However, the adhesive force in these cartons increases due to better pressure resistance. In this type of cartons as well as other high weight cartons, it is better to tape the edges of the doors. There are special automatic sealing machines for this job (edge sealing).

In general, thicker adhesives (film thickness and adhesive liquid) have more strength and durability.
For example, for cartons with dimensions of 40 cm in length and 30 cm in width and 25 cm in height and weight of about 12 kg, a tape width of 48 mm and a thickness of 40 microns with acrylic emulsion adhesive is suitable for working in normal climates.

The best way to choose the right tape for each job is to rely on the written experience of each unit. That is, after the initial selection of the adhesive tape, the packaged cartons should be examined at different times (one month, two months, …) with the knowledge of the minimum and maximum shelf life of the product in the selected warehouse and store, and a written report from Prepared their situation. These reports show us what to do for the next election?

  • Adhesion and durability: Depending on the type, value and sensitivity of the packaging product, different classes of adhesion are needed. Sometimes it has to be closed so tightly in the carton that it can be opened only by cutting the glue (expensive products such as audio-visual equipment), but sometimes the manufacturer wants the glue to open easily. Also, the effective retention time of the adhesive force is different. There are products that come out of the carton and are consumed after a short time (such as food), but there are also products that do not have a time limit.

Reputable adhesive companies give their adhesive adhesion to the consumer.
The thicker the adhesive tape, the greater the adhesion and durability.
The adhesion and durability of solvent-based acrylic adhesives is higher than that of water-based acrylics.

  • Climate and durability: All BOPP products have very good resistance to different humidity and air temperature. These films do not deform significantly in almost any air temperature from -20 to +50.

Different adhesives have different sensitivities to low and high temperatures and humidity.
Solvent-based adhesives are more resistant to cold than water-based adhesives. In fact, water-based adhesives lose their effectiveness in colder than -5. Also, cold air (above zero degree) reduces the durability of adhesion, which is more the case with water-based adhesives.
Both types of adhesives at temperatures above +50 gradually lose their adhesion and easily lift off the work surface.

Before proposing the above, it should be noted that quality is basically a relative category, so in choosing the adhesive tape, each consumer should seek the desired quality by comparatively measuring the following factors.

  • Adhesion: The force required to separate the adhesive tape from a well-adhered surface. Its amount can be measured by a dynamometer at the defined level and compared with the reference sample.
  • Film Ingredients: We have already explained this.
  • Thickness: Usually the thickness of adhesive tapes used in the packaging industry is about 35 microns to 65 microns.

An important issue in this case is the uniformity of thickness at different points along the length of the strip. Non-uniformity causes unwanted rupture during consumption. For better control, according to the basic rules of quality control, different samples of cargo should be randomly selected and the amount of thickness should be controlled at different points of length. Needless to say, thickness will have a virtual measure of tolerance. Another way to control thickness is to use weight. Manufacturers usually know the heat (weight per unit area) of their adhesives. By having the heat and the length of the ring, you can easily make sure of its true thickness or length by weighing each ring.

  • Type of adhesive: In packaging adhesives, it is usually polycrylic with water or chemical solvent. The second type has more quality, efficiency and price than the first type. It is also used for cold weather (goods stored and carried in the cold store) and more weights.
  • The amount of traction: depends on the type and quality of the film. The elongation rate in BOPP films (the best type for producing adhesive tape) is up to 180%.يعني فيلم در شرايط متعارف پس از حدود 180% كشش پاره مي شود.
  • Shear strength: refers to the resistance of the adhesive to weight. It is measured in units of minutes per minute.
  • Remaining effect of adhesive on the surface: If we remove the adhesive glued on the surface after a short time, how much effect of the adhesive will remain on the surface?
  • Unwind: The force required to open the adhesive from the ring, which depends on the quality of the material that is sprayed on the back of the tape for this purpose. This release coating allows the adhesive to be opened in a controlled manner. This is especially important when using carton automatic gluing machines. Adhesives that have a defective quality of the release coating or the adhesive material, or without They are difficult to control or open with a lot of noise, and today silent tapes are produced by improving the quality of the film and the release material.
  • Production time: Usually the tapes must be used within a certain period after production. This time varies in different types of adhesives. To identify the remaining adhesives, you can pay attention to their color. Over time, the color becomes dull. Also, the releasing coating material loses its properties over time and the adhesive does not open easily. The expired adhesive tape is easily removed from the surface and a large part of the adhesive material remains on the surface.
  • Simple microscopic information: In this case, we can refer to the analysis of the film and adhesive structure, but this operation is specialized and costly.

An easier way is to physically examine the adhesive tape with a laboratory microscope. Quality film has smooth and smooth edges. In the structure of MOPP films (where the film is stretched in one direction only during production and is not suitable for the production of adhesive tape), clear polarized structures are seen over the entire displacement surface, these structures are not present in BOPP films.
The microscopic arrangement of the coated adhesive layer in the types is of very regular and uniform quality.

Plastic film can be produced from different combinations (with different amounts) and in different thicknesses. Adhesive liquid can also have different compositions and thicknesses. In this way, by changing the above factors, many different types of adhesive tapes are produced, which are used in various industries (from printing and stationery to construction, automotive, electricity and packaging).

In fact, adhesive tapes are initially produced in the form of large and wide rolls of film (JUMBO ROLL) and then covered with adhesive liquids. These rolls are then opened by special machines (slitters) and in different widths (10 to 20). Mm in stationery, 25 to 72 mm in packaging and wider widths in construction and insulation industries (cut and rewinded with desired lengths).

Polypropylene (PP) films are mostly used in the packaging industry. PP can be used because of its much higher hardness (three times that of mold films and eight times that of polyethylene PE) and also because it can be used in thermal adhesion. Current global consumption of PP is estimated at more than one million tons per year. Typical film thicknesses range from 15 to 50 microns.

The films used to produce the adhesive tape are usually of the BOPP (bi axially oriented poly propylene) type. In this method, the thickness is more uniform and also the film is not easily torn by stretching in width and length, but it is stretched in simple language, ie the breaking point can occur after 100 to even 180% stretching.
The most important advantages of these films are:

  • High hardness
  • High tensile strength
  • Very good barrier against water
  • High recycling ability
  • Microbial contamination much less than other films
  • Easy to print
  • Ability to present in different colors

The type and quality of the adhesive that is applied to the film, as well as the quality of the coating, is the second factor in shaping the type of adhesive tape.

Release coat: Makes the adhesive tape easy to remove from the roll. This combination is usually almost the same in different factories.
Backing film: The same plastic film we described earlier.
Primer coat: causes better quality (durability) of the adhesive liquid on the film. This combination is the same in most factories.
Adhesive mass coating: Different types of adhesives with different compositions and thicknesses are used in the manufacture of adhesive tapes. The most common type in most adhesive tapes is acrylic polymer, which comes in two types

  • Water-based acrylic emulsion
  • Adhesive liquid with chemical solvent

is used. The composition of these adhesives and the times of their use are the secrets of the expertise of each manufacturer, which is achieved over time and takes great care of it. Of course, in this regard, there are national and international standards available.
The thickness of the film and the adhesive usually follow defined ratios. For example, the most common packaging tapes are presented in the following ratios:

It seems that knowing the principles of physics governing the nature of the operation of tape adhesives can not be the key to entering the world of manufacturing, but contrary to what scientists have found, one can find the answer to this question for many questions. Which occupied the minds of the people in this regard, and achieved an acceptable answer.
If you examine the surface of a piece of adhesive tape with a powerful and advanced microscope, you will see that the surface is not flat. On the surface of the adhesive tape, there are sunken spots and protrusions that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
When the surface of the adhesive tape is pressed in contact with the other surface, air bubbles are trapped between the two surfaces and inside the recesses of the adhesive surface.
These air bubbles act like millions of suction units, and because of this, the glue sticks to the desired surface and is difficult to separate from it. To remove the adhesive from the surface to which it is attached, you must release the trapped air bubbles.
To do this, you must gently lift the glue from the paper, because when the adhesive tape sticks to the surface, the air bubbles are sealed in such a way that not even an air molecule can enter any of these bubbles. Find a way. By sticking the adhesive tape on the desired surface, the air pressure inside each of the bubbles and their dimensions are reduced.
This means that the ambient air pressure overcomes the air pressure inside the air bubbles, causing it to adhere better, but if you apply enough force, you can easily remove the adhesive from any surface.
When a small cut or hole is made in the surface of the adhesive, air penetrates to the surface under the adhesive, and the adhesive is easily removed. The adhesive in strip adhesives is different from the adhesive in liquid adhesives.
Unlike liquid adhesives, where the adhesive dries two surfaces or two different pieces after drying; Tape adhesives, as soon as you remove a piece of it, have the ability to glue the desired surfaces or parts together, of course, the type of adhesive used in the preparation of tape adhesives, depending on its application. Is different.
