Richard Drew began making tape in 1925. A two-inch-wide tan bar with a pressure-sensitive back. The purpose of the automatic tape was to help them cover objects that could not be painted.

As Drew tested the tape to see how much more glue was needed, a painter told Drew: “Return the tape to your Scottish bosses and tell them to put more glue on it!” The name of the adhesive was then applied to the entire line of tapes.

The first tape he invented was made of oil, resin and rubber. When the glue is applied to the back, it must be in a liquid state to spread.

These days, chemists use a chemical or physical process to convert a resin into a binder. The method used depends on the desired resistance of the bonding agent.

His next major invention was in 1932, when the first hand-held tape recorder was invented. It was made of cast iron and weighed about 7 pounds.

Then, in 1937, the “snail”, the symbolic tape player, was created. Since the invention of the hand-held Scotch tape player, Scotch tape has become a prominent part of American culture.
